The Pancake Challenge: A Hilarious Adventure on the PCT
Today was a day of surprises and challenges on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). It all started with a birthday celebration for Birdman, complete with a banner hanging between the trees. But the real adventure began when I stumbled upon a unique challenge at the Seiad Valley Cafe.
The Pancake Challenge, as it's known, involves eating five 'challenge size' pancakes within two hours, and if successful, it's free! I witnessed a hilarious spectacle as Posh Spice took on this daunting task. The pancakes were massive, bigger than his head, and the entire cafe was buzzing with excitement.
Posh's determination was admirable, but the dense pancakes proved to be a challenge. He devoured the first pancake in 20 minutes, but the second one took him 35 minutes, and unfortunately, he couldn't finish the third. It was a tough feat, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for his effort.
After the challenge, I joined Posh and a new hiking buddy, Yoshi, for the road walk out of Seiad Valley. This route was a delightful surprise, offering a creek-side path, abundant blackberries, and a refreshing waterfall with a swimming hole. It was a much-needed break from the trail's challenges.
We even met up with Drom and Flash for a quick dinner before continuing our journey. The climb out of Seiad Valley, though initially daunting, became more manageable as the sun set, and the temperature dropped. I found myself enjoying the golden hour hike, a surprising revelation.
Looking ahead, the next few days into Ashland seem much easier, and I'm eager to tackle them. The PCT never ceases to amaze with its unexpected twists and turns, and I can't wait to see what other adventures await.
In my opinion, the Pancake Challenge is a brilliant idea, adding a touch of humor and competition to the hiking experience. It's a testament to the creativity of cafe owners and the willingness of hikers to take on new challenges. I'd love to see more unique events like this along the trail, bringing joy and camaraderie to fellow adventurers.
