Ilia Topuria Teases A Major Announcement On The Horizon
Ilia Topuria’s next move could be closer than we think. The undefeated UFC sensation posted a cryptic tease on Instagram this week, hinting that “big news is coming soon.” It’s been more than eight months since his last appearance, during which Topuria stepped away to handle personal matters, including what he described as “false allegations of domestic abuse.”
You can see his post here for reference.
Note that he doesn’t explicitly say the upcoming news is about a fight.
Topuria, who sits at 17-0, is often regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. He first claimed a featherweight title by defeating legends Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, then relinquished that belt to move up to the 155-pound division. There, he knocked out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in June to capture a second championship.
Recently, Topuria told streamer Adin Ross that he might pursue one more weight class and challenge welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, the fighter who vacated the lightweight title before Topuria’s ascent. Makhachev is awaiting his first defense after beating 170-pound champ Jack Della Maddalena in November.
In the realm of speculation, Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has hinted at a “big fight” for his client, though there are no solid reports yet about a Makhachev-Topuria superfight materializing soon. Abdelaziz’s hint remains ambiguous, especially since another client, Kamaru Usman, has suggested he may not be in the running for a bout with Makhachev. Abdelaziz also shut down chatter that Ian Garry is locked in for a welterweight title shot.
Topuria currently has several high-profile lightweights in his crosshairs: Justin Gaethje, who earned an interim belt by defeating Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324; and Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira, who clash in Saturday’s UFC 326 main event.
Thoughts? Do you think Topuria is signaling a fight, a move up a weight class, or something entirely different? Which opponent would you most like to see him face next, and why? Share your take in the comments.
