A recent speech by Prime Minister Mark Carney has sparked controversy and raised questions about his understanding of Quebec's history. In a bold statement, Immigration Minister Jean-François Roberge described Carney's remarks as a "historic error" and a "gaffe."
The speech, delivered in Quebec City, aimed to highlight the significance of the Plains of Abraham, a historic site where the French forces led by Louis-Joseph de Montcalm faced defeat at the hands of the British under James Wolfe in 1759. Carney's interpretation, however, has been met with ridicule and criticism.
"The Battle of the Plains of Abraham represents the conquest and the culmination point where the English defeated the French, burning villages and more. There's nothing glorious about it," Roberge emphasized in an interview with Radio-Canada. He further accused Carney of lacking knowledge about Quebec's history, especially considering the context of the battle and its impact on the province's past.
Carney's speech stands in stark contrast to his well-received address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, just a day earlier. Analysts and politicians have pointed out this discrepancy, questioning Carney's understanding of Quebec's historical narrative.
"It's false what he said. He probably wanted to deliver a speech on Canadian unity, but it was clumsy. He didn't realize the historical implications of his words. He wanted to encourage Quebecers to feel Canadian, but instead, he showed that this Canadian doesn't know Quebec's history," Roberge added.
The timing of Carney's remarks is particularly sensitive, as they come on the eve of a major Parti Québécois policy convention, where approximately 1,400 people are expected to attend. PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon quickly responded to the speech on social media, criticizing the federal government's distortion of Quebec's history and its promises to end the contempt shown towards Quebec's democratic choices.
St-Pierre Plamondon further elaborated on Carney's speech during a news conference in St-Hyacinthe, where he suggested that Carney's comments align with a long tradition of colonialism dating back to Lord Durham's vision of uniting Upper and Lower Canada and assimilating French Canadians in the 1800s.
When asked about the potential impact of Carney's remarks on the independence movement, St-Pierre Plamondon stated that political analysis was not his role. Instead, he emphasized his duty to respond when statements are not only untrue but also harmful to Quebec society.
