A Lifetime of Care: Valerie Nugent's Legacy in Cancer Care Leadership (2026)

A true leader, Valerie Nugent, is retiring after an inspiring 41-year journey in healthcare. But here's the twist: her impact goes far beyond her official role.

For over four decades, Valerie has been a beacon of care and leadership in Cape Breton. Starting as a registered nurse, she joined Nova Scotia Health in 1984 and quickly established herself as a front-line hero and a leader. Her dedication and expertise led her to become the director of the Cancer Care program in the Eastern Zone, a role she held for over a decade.

As she reflects on her career, Valerie emphasizes the people she's worked with and the patients she's cared for. "I've been incredibly fortunate to work alongside individuals who shared the same values and vision as me and the organization. This alignment and the support I received from my colleagues have been instrumental in our success," she shares.

Cancer care, as Valerie describes it, is an environment centered entirely around the patient. Every decision, every conversation, was guided by this patient-first approach. "This focus on the patient is what drove my passion and, I believe, led to our team's success. It's a philosophy I hold dear," she adds.

When asked about career highlights, Valerie points to the advancements in cancer care. "The progress we've seen in radiation therapy and systemic treatments, from basic chemotherapy to advanced chemotherapy and now immunotherapy, has been remarkable. We're witnessing patients living longer and healthier lives, and that's a privilege to be a part of," she explains.

And the future looks even brighter. Valerie highlights the upcoming Cape Breton Cancer Care Centre, named after Kyle Anne MacDonald, which is set to open in 2027. "This new center, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, will revolutionize patient care and diagnosis, allowing them to receive treatment closer to home. It's a game-changer," she says with enthusiasm.

Valerie's leadership and commitment to her team and patients haven't gone unnoticed. Last month, she received the prestigious Making Waves Award for Leadership Excellence. In her humble response, Valerie credits the incredible people she's worked with, highlighting the support and camaraderie that enabled her to lead high-functioning teams.

"The team's passion for excellence is evident in the high-quality culture we've built. Their resilience and adaptability are a testament to their dedication to our patients. It's an honor to have been a part of this journey," she adds.

As Valerie steps away from her official role, she knows her legacy will live on through the team she's nurtured. "The team is young, innovative, and works within a culture of trust. This is a legacy I'm incredibly proud of. They are well-equipped to continue providing exceptional care and supporting each other," she says.

Her advice to other leaders is simple yet powerful: lead by example and recognize your team as your most valuable asset. "An empowered, high-functioning team is the key to delivering exceptional results. Never underestimate their potential," she advises.

Valerie's journey is a testament to the impact one person can have. Her leadership and passion will continue to benefit her community as she transitions into retirement. While she looks forward to spending more time with loved ones, she's also eager to find new ways to give back. "I have so much more to offer, and I plan to serve on boards, volunteer, and continue contributing to my community. It's been an incredible 41-year journey, and I'm grateful for every moment," she concludes.

Congratulations, Valerie, on an extraordinary career and your well-deserved Making Waves award!
